It seemed like such an innocent scene, and in reality it was. The biggest danger was the momentary fear when his mother thought he’d been lost, but there were plenty of other eyes there to let her know where he’d scampered to. The contrast was not in the present, but in the ghosts of the past. The lush greenery hid the German bunkers and the massive guns that spilled so much blood one summer day in Normandy. Some soldiers were following orders, some fought to save themselves, and some didn’t know why they fought. But some were there so that 67 years later, a little boy could run through the grass to explore and play on a peaceful hillside by the sea.
