It was a shady café on the square, perfect for watching without being noticed. It felt old fashioned even in the Old World. We didn’t often get the glass of water, for example, and bite-sized almond cookie to help wash the coffee down. The air was cool in the shade and we felt relaxed, comfortable. There were many people to see: tourists, local fisherman, teenagers out shopping, a street salesman wearing an incongruous sombrero. We sat for a while, drinking it all in – the smells, the colors, the coffee, and the salty air. Then, coffee and water gone, cookie eaten, it was time to move on.
